If you love asking 'why' and 'what if', research might be your calling. From ISRO and IISc to global labs, India needs deep scientists in physics, biology, chemistry, and more. The path is long — BSc/BTech → MSc → PhD — but you get to work on problems no one has solved yet.
Step by step
Your roadmap
1
Strong base
Undergrad (3–4 yrs)- Target research-focused programs: IISc, IISERs, or a strong BSc.
- Crack IIT-JAM / IISER aptitude / KVPY-style exams where relevant.
- Get into a lab early — assist a professor on real work.
2
Specialise
Master's (2 yrs)- Do an MSc/MS and pick a focused research area.
- Publish or co-author at least one paper.
- Build relationships with potential PhD advisors.
3
Go deep
PhD + beyond- Clear GATE/NET or apply abroad for a funded PhD.
- Join a national lab (ISRO, DRDO, CSIR) or academia.
- Move towards independent research or R&D in industry.
